Women’s Participation in Election

The Afghan Civic Engagement Program (ACEP) is being implemented by THRA in Nangarhar and Laghman provinces of the eastern region.

Women are the most deprived and vulnerable group in the eastern region, have no enough awareness and access to their rights and think that they are just responsible for their children and house work.

THRA conducted a Civic Education Session on 21st April 2015 in Faizabad village, Sraroad district of Nangarhar Province.

During the conducted Civic Education Session in Faizabad village for 25 women, when the Civic Educator was talking about elections and its importance, one of the participants named Jomaildara said, [we actively participated in the last elections and we voted in very bad security situation, but it was not useful for us, currently, the Security is worse than the past, Unemployment has increased, the government is not informed of the condition of the poor people and so on... And in the future, we will never participate in any elections, as it does not benefit us].

But when the session conducted with having materials on elections and its importance and the dialogue among participants on the importance, at the end of the session, she said, [I didn’t know the importance of my participation in elections, but now I have realized that I should vote, because this is our right and our national responsibility to choose good and capable persons as our leaders for our prosperous future and, I reached to the point that the situation can be worsened if we do not take active part in the upcoming election].

And she also added, “I am happy for making this decision, because on one hand I will do my responsibility as a citizen in a good way towards my people and on the other hand this will help us to improve current condition of the country by voting for good persons, And, my message for other women is; to utilize their rights and serve their people.” She was really very thankful to THRA for conducting such sessions and CPI- USAID for supporting the sessions financially.
